During the last few decades, the Central Government has undertaken various initiatives, policies & schemes, such as Startup India, Make in India, AtmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan etc. to provide thrust to the MSME sector. Under these initiatives various Technology Business Incubators (TBI), Science and Technology Entrepreneur Parks (STEP) and other similar enabling organizations were created. One such organization, Tamil Nadu Technology Development & Promotion Centre (TNTDPC), was established under the joint participation of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with active support of Department of Science & Technology Govt. of India. TNTDPC, was conceived as a one-stop shop for Technology Development & Promotion, Technology Upgradation and Induction of New Technologies in Tamil Nadu as a unique model in the country.

Tamil Nadu is one of the leading States in the MSME Sector in India and has the third-largest number of MSMEs in the country with leadership position in several critical industrial sectors. The Government of Tamil Nadu unveiled its new industrial policy 2021 and MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) policy, 2021. The objective of the industrial policy is to achieve an annual growth rate of 15% in the manufacturing sector and attract investments worth ₹10 lakh crore and create employment opportunities for 20 lakh people by 2025. The industrial policy also hopes to increase the contribution of the manufacturing sector to 30% of the State’s economy by 2030.The MSME policy has set a target to attract new investments worth ₹2 lakh crore in the sector by 2025 and also create additional employment opportunities for 20 lakh persons.

TNTDPC functions as an accelerator to bring in the best technologies that can solve business problem and thereby help the organization and customers to avail meaningful benefits from its technology investment. TNTDPC leverage the strengths of industry experts to identify and explore new technologies in a domains like Agriculture, Food Processing, Automobiles, Defence & Aerospace, emerging technologies etc. It also promotes these technologies through conferences, workshop, training programs, product launches and so on.

TNTDPC launched three new initiatives namely, promotion of poultry, dairy technologies for rural prosperity and Defence champion cluster. These would not only enhance competitiveness in becoming vendors for PSUs in defence and aerospace sectors but will also build upon the existing strengths to develop eco system that will benefit MSMEs.

TNTDPC created a compendium of 51 women accomplishers in STEM that has been released. This book is a guiding light for young professionals early and even in the middle of their career, to question their limits of what is possible. The story of these 51 women accomplishers in STEM will help the future generations to aim higher and achieve their dreams.

TNTDPC offers essential support and assistance to MSMEs, entrepreneurs and startups for Intellectual Property Rights (Patents, Trademarks – TM, Copyright and Geographical Indications). A flagship initiative, CTO Forum, has been very effective in connecting technology leaders from diverse portfolios through knowledge sharing discussions in emerging technologies, sharing of best practices and so on.

I am happy to state that TNTDPC delivers a diverse range of technical and consultancy solutions for the promotion and growth of MSMEs in the State and provide an added impetus to attain sustainable growth. TNTDPC is on its way to meet the growing expectations effectively. Efforts to increase the reach of this centre and expanding the horizon of its activities would continue to be the focus in the coming years. I envision TNTDPC to become the primary body in the state for catalyzing the technology growth and industrial development.
